Firefox Close tab button

Firefox Close tab buttonThe button for closing the tab in the Firefox browser is just on the right of the title shown on the tab in the top, and that is a place where you can accidentally click the Close tab button when you were actually intending to click on the adjacent tab and switch to it. Closing a tab accidentally is quite annoying, especially when you were doing some important stuff, and it was quite a bit heavy page which took ages to load already on the slow Internet connection.

Closed a Firefox tab? Here’s how to Restore it

If you have closed a tab accidentally, then to restore it you don’t have a direct option under the Menu but there is a keyboard shortcut which would do the job, and restoring would be quite fast because the content is cached by the browser unless you are in the Private browsing mode.

Ctrl + Shift + T

That would just restore the tab, just like a Ctrl + T opens a new tab. You can press the same combination multiple number of times if you wanted to restore the past few closed tabs.

Remove “Close Tab” button in the Firefox

This is especially for those who wanted to remove the annoying close tab button in the Firefox browser, or at least move it from where it is presently located. You need to follow the given steps below to remove the close tab button:

Go to the Address bar in the Firefox browser and then type about:config and press enter. You will be given a warning, which you have to agree with, by clicking on “I’ll be careful, I promise!” button.

Firefox about config

In the list given, browse to “browser.tabs.closeButtons” or search for the same in the list. It is the function which would have the preference set for the close button. Right click on that and click “Modify”.

Now, you would see a popup with the preference set for the close button, and that by default would be 1. Check what preference you might want, and what number you need to enter for that:

  • 0: A close button is shown only on the active tab
  • 1: Shows the close button on every tab (default option)
  • 2: Removes the close button from all the tabs
  • 3: Display a single close button at the end of the tab bar, just like in the Firefox 1x

It is all your choice, but for the actual option which we are talking about, i.e. removing the close button totally from all the tabs in the browser, you need to enter the value as 2, and then save it. That would remove all the remove buttons.

Do remember that these buttons appear only when there are a few tabs present in the Firefox browser, because when there are many, then only the current active tab would be having the close button.
